His Kindness Leads Us to Repentance

“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?” Rom. 2:4.

In the NIV we read, “…not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?”

What men often classify as tragedy and disaster, ruin and brokenness of heart brought about by the assertion of self will and even trying to do God’s will in some cases (as concocted in our own minds by our own thinking and feelings) is often a kindness of God.

Did not the Prodigal’s father allow him to go to the far country?

These great crises of our lives are but disguises for the God’s loving-kindnesses. He, in His enduring mercy and grace has revealed to you (and that perhaps often) the futility of your own plans and strength to work apart from Him. “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5.

We plan and strategize our hours our days and our lives, we set our agendas and goals and all “apart from Him”, without seeking Him. Then God, by His kindness allows it all to fall on our heads, crushing the spirit of Self, till we cry out, “God help me! I have sinned against You and You alone.”

Now He can prepare the fatted calf, now He can get the royal robe and place it on our back, now He can put the ring of relationship on our finger. Because now He can forgive us on the basis of our repentance.

His kindness leads us to repentance.
