Woven Into The Fabric of the Cross And do not misunderstand these words. I have not described to you a way to get out of the cross. Even though you utterly abandon yourself to the Lord and completely resign yourself to suffering, this will not prevent you from feeling the weight of the cross. If you have not felt the cross, then you have not suffered…. Pain is an inescapable aspect of the cross. Without it, there has been no cross at all. Suffering is woven into the nature of the cross. Pain is at the center of knowing suffering. Please remember that your Lord chose to ignore the most extreme violence the cross could offer. Sometimes you may bear the cross in weakness; at other times you may bear the cross in strength. But whether you bear in weakness or in strength, bear it! Both weakness and strength should be the same to us since we bear the cross in the will of God. Jeanne Guyon – Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ, circa 1680
Chew Your Food Before You Swallow The true method of conquering wandering thoughts is never to attack them directly with harshness, and never to be discouraged by their frequency or duration. Allow yourself, then, to be quietly occupied by the subject you have chosen…. Do not burden yourself with a great number of thoughts upon a subject. Simply dwell upon each sufficiently long to allow it to provide its proper nourishment to your heart. You will gradually become accustomed to regard each truth steadily by itself, without flitting from one to another. This habit will serve to fix the truths deeply in your soul. Praying That I Might Be One with All-in-All The Word is the exact representation of You. The exact Expression of Your Will. Father, may the Word dwell the my heart richly, that I might become a son of God. May my will be eclipsed and overshadowed by Your Will. By your grace, power and Spirit may I give my life to You so that I might become Your Life in me. I pray also that we may be One as the Father and Son are One. There is one body and one Spirit — just as you were called to one hope when you were called — one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. (4:4-6). Just as Eve was taken from the side of Adam, in like manner shall the Church be placed into God. Tom Van Hoogen
Redemption Changes Everything When a man gets convicted of sin (which is the most direct way of knowing that there is a problem at the basis of life), he knows that he cannot carry the burden of it; he also knows that God dare not forgive him; if He did, it would mean that man s sense of justice is bigger than God s. If I am forgiven without being altered, forgiveness is not only damaging to me, but a sign of unmitigated weakness in God. Unless it is possible for God s forgiveness to establish an order of holiness and rectitude, forgiveness is a mean and abominable thing. Oswald Chambers – The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers
Mutual Love Circulates the Blood that Washes Christians pray to Christ to save them from their sins, but they know very little how the blessed work is done. The living Christ reveals Himself to us, and through the power of his love, the love of sin is expelled. It is through personal fellowship with Him that Jesus saves us from our sins. I must come as an individual, with my heart and all the sin that is in it, to Jesus as an almighty personal Savior in whom God s holiness dwells. And as He and I commune together in the expression of mutual love and desire, by the work of the Holy Spirit in my heart, His love will expel and conquer all sins. He Is What He Is, Perfectly The divine attributes are what we know to be true of God. He does not possess them as qualities; they are how God is as He reveals Himself to His creatures. Love, for instance, is not something God has and which may grow or diminish or cease to be. His love is the way God is, and when He loves He is simply being Himself. And so with the other attributes. The Church is Infiltrated By the World Ultimately, when we touch the things of the world, the question we must ask ourselves always is: “How is this thing affecting my relationship with the Father?” The time has passed when we need to go out into the world in order to make contact with it. Today the world comes and searches us out. There is a force abroad now which is captivating men. Have you ever felt the power of the world as much as today? Have you ever heard so much talk about money? Have you ever thought so much about food and clothing? Wherever you go, even among Christians, the things of the world are the topics of conversation. The world has advanced to the very door of the Church and is seeking to draw even the saints of God into its grasp. Never in this sphere of things have we needed to know the power of the Cross of Christ to deliver us as we do at the present time. Watchman Nee – Love Not The World, © 1968 CLC Publications
Its Even Worse Than You Could Imagine Imagination cannot mislead us into too much horror of being without God — that one living death. George MacDonald – The Best of George MacDonald © 2006 Cook Communications Ministries.
God Knows, And You Have His Mind Almost everyone has an inner capacity — some more, some less — to sense spiritual truths without knowing how they have attained them. As someone has said: “They know without knowing how.” For instance, Colburn, when six years old, was asked how many seconds there are in 11 years. In 4 seconds he gave the correct answer. When questioned as to how he arrived at the answer all he could say was that the answer had come to his mind. Just so God reveals spiritual realities to those who seek to live according to his will.
