v4.29 The Big Picture – Part 12

The Big Picture – Part 12

Fishers of Men

So, although we talk of belief in Him and talk about God and Christ and the Holy Spirit, we do not know Him. We do not come to Him that we may have Life. Instead, we turn to the religious idols (intangible beliefs, traditions and physical charms, including church buildings) men, and ourselves, have concocted and force Him to fit Him into our image.

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not honour from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.” John 5:39-45.

Interesting He says that they (and by implication many of us) are trusting in Moses. These were contemporaries of Jesus that He was speaking to. What were they trusting Moses for? They were trusting in the keeping of the Law (which at this point had largely become the traditions of men) to save them. Please God, anything but trusting you. We can’t control that. We can control what we can do, so we can trust in our own ability and strength to be good enough, to do the “right things”. But to trust you requires faith and a sacrifice of my control, my will to You. Please, not that.

Yes that. There is really no other Way, except faith in His ability, His strength, His Love. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12. We must rest our entire weight of hope on Him. We must learn to practice and sacrifice every minute of this life on the altar, a living sacrifice. Then and only then are we trusting Him. Then and only then do we have faith in God. Then do we truly believe.

Faith is exhibited in this letting go of our agenda, our will, our desires, our hopes, our fears, our very life for His, that He might live and move and have His Being in us, through our personalities. It is in this death that you live and do not die. You give up the sordid, wrecked life of Self and gain His Life in you. It is a substitutionary life. He gave His life for you. Won’t you give your life for His? He acted in faith, won’t you also trust the Father?

Unfortunately for most this is just too much to ask. They still want to ask the question: “What’s in it for me?” Well, I am glad you asked. Everything. Everything you always wanted, and fought and coveted and sought to gain in your flesh is gained — no, received — in the Spirit of Christ. You get Love.

That is the bait. God lures us with love. He knows that inside us is a deep longing for intimacy and love that goes unfulfilled. He also knows that nobody will experience true Love apart from Him. He created the Love hole in you so that only He can fill the space. Nothing, no nothing, nor no one, can ever come even close to filling that hole. You will attempt to put everything you think may work into that hole, but it cannot fill it.

It is this Love that beckons men to come and rest. Come to Me and receive rest for your weary soul. So this is the test of the heart. Do you Love Me or do you love Self more? Do you trust Me, or do you trust Self more? These types of questions and the answers you demonstrate to them every day all day make clear your own heart, your own desires and beliefs.

God came to earth on a fishing trip, to catch the hearts of men that would be attracted to the bait of His Love. “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10. And He came to teach us to do the same.”And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matt. 4:19.

Many who have been caught by the Lure of Love have now become fishers of men like their Teacher and Master, yet sadly many others have never even been fishing. They just want to be caught, not taught.

The Blessedness of Beholding Him I have already said something of the general blessings of God, which, in the natural course of things, come to the good and the bad alike. However, beyond this bounty, He has reserved for the good a special sign of His great love. We can never sufficiently thank Him for the gifts of nature: that we exist in our lives, that we can enjoy the sight of earth and sky, that we have a reasoning mind by which we can seek Him who has made all these things. Yet, for the greater gifts of grace there are not hearts enough nor tongues enough in all the world even to try to thank Him. For, when we were burdened and broken by our sins, and our minds were turned from His light and blinded by the love of the darkness of iniquity, He did not leave us to ourselves, but sent to us His Word, who is His only Son, so that, by His birth and passion in the flesh He assumed for our salvation, we might learn how highly God esteemed our human nature, and that we might be cleansed from all our sins by His unique Sacrifice and, by His Spirit, have Love poured into our hearts, so that, with all our warring over, we might come to everlasting rest in the supreme blessedness of gazing on His face. Yours For the Taking This verse sums up what has been said before this is a cross!… The Lord has not said that he who does not take up his burden and follow after Him is not worthy of Him. No, He says that whoever does not take up his cross and follow after Him is not worthy of him. A burden is not a cross. Burden is something inescapable; the cross, however, is subject to personal choice and can therefore be avoided. What the first cross in history was, so the countless smaller crosses will be which shall follow afterwards; just as the original cross was chosen by the Lord, so the crosses for today must also be chosen by us…. All the crosses one takes up must be chosen by oneself…. We should take the cross, not make it. Watchman Nee – The Salvation of the Soul, © 1978 Christian Fellowship Publishers, Inc.
All Ye Who Will, Enter In When once you have defeated the enemies of God (i.e. sin, pride, self-isms) you will enter the land (operate in the Spirit) in open places (in Christ). Once you are in Christ all the worldly activities (e.g. eating meat) are unrestricted and unlimited. You may enjoy yourself in Christ. There is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Take eat. Do not call unclean what God has cleaned. Tom Van Hoogen
The Precious Price of Progress The majority of us prefer to get up and ride rather than to get out and shove. It is only the people who get out and shove who really make things go. The men who are up against things just now and who are determined to get at Reality at all costs, and will not accept a thing on the religious line unless that line states Reality these are the men who are paying the price for the next generation. The reason we are here in the natural world is because our mothers struggled for our existence, and the more unhindered the birth pangs the stronger and healthier the child. A thing is worth just what it costs. Oswald Chambers – The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers
God-Man, The Intersection of Extremes And now I began to find that this duplex passion was the Christian key to ethics everywhere. Everywhere the Creed made a moderation out of the still crash of two impetuous emotions. Take, for instance, the matter of modesty, of the balance between mere pride and mere prostration…. It separated the two ideas and then exaggerated them both. In one way Man was to be heartier than he had ever been before; in another way he was to be humbler than he had ever been before. In so far as I am Man I am the chief of creatures. In so far as I am a man I am the chief of sinners. G. K. Chesterton – Orthodoxy, copyright 1908 by Dodd, Mead and Company

The Disallusionment of Knowing I remember, I remember,
the fir-trees dark and high;
I used to think of their slender tops
were close against the sky;
it was a childish ignorance,
but now tis little joy
to know I’m farther off from heaven
then when I was a boy.

Man s Capacity for Love vs Angel s Incapacity It is a mysterious thing, and one to which we scarcely dare allude, that there has arisen a Redeemer of fallen man, but not the fallen angels. We would build no theory on so awful and inscrutable a truth; but it is too much to say that the interference on the behalf of man and the non-interference on the behalf of angels, gives ground for the persuasion, that men occupy at least not a lower place than Angels in the love and the solicitude of their Maker? God, The Infinite Measure of Perfections Every attribute of God, every revelation of His character, every proof of His undying love, every declaration of His watchful care, every assertion of His purposes of tender mercy, every manifestation of His loving kindness all are the filling out of this unfinished “I am.” Hannah Whitall Smith – The God of All Comfort, circa 1890 – 1956 Edition Moody Publishers
A Promise with a Punch What God in His sovereignty may yet do on a world-scale I do not claim to know: but what He will do for the plain man or woman who seeks His face I believe I do know and can tell others. Let any man turn to God in earnest, let him begin to exercise himself unto godliness, let him seek to develop his powers of spiritual receptivity by trust and obedience and humility, and the results will exceed anything he may have hoped in his leaner and weaker days. A. W. Tozer – The Pursuit of God

Thank you Sir! May I Have Another?

God is continually showering down his Love and Grace on all of us. Yet it is easy for many of us to miss the bucketfuls of blessings. We do not recognize His love because we have misclassified it.

It is only when all is according to our will and good pleasure that we “feel the love”. We “loves me some me” as a colorful egoist put it before the media. We too often equate love as the bringing of good things to ourselves, things that we enjoy and make us “feel” good. We “loves me some me” by the oceanfuls.

Here is an abrupt bursting of that illusion and self-deception. “For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” Prov. 3:12.

Whoa, wait a minute! That can’t be true. You mean to tell me that there is pain and correction in the expression of love? No I didn’t say that, God did. You are a child of God, right? If so, then He also says, “Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.” Prov. 22:15.

You see, this is the unenviable position and role of a good father. This world, this country, this town, this house, even to the soul of you, cannot be at rest and peace without order. Order only comes by an ordered hierarchy of authority. With no rules, no boundaries, no power to enforce them we are left with chaos. Chaos was over the earth before “the beginning”. But, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.” Gen 1:1-2.

It is Authority — God — who put the earth in order and made it habitable. And this world, this country, this town, this house and your soul are habitable only by a submission to authority.

This is the job that a “good father” has — to bring order into chaos. A father must establish a righteousness within the kingdom of your earth through a chastening, rebuking and bringing to submission the chaos of your soul.

You want to sin, operate independently, self-centeredly with no recognition to authority, rules or boundaries. “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1:14-15.

Your father knows best. He is trying to save your soul. He is trying to teach you by the loving way he is establishing righteousness in your soul through the rules and boundaries established by authority in you. And sadly, most of us hate our father for it. We see him as unloving.

We have misclassified his love as hateful and hurtful. It may be hurtful but his love is not harmful. Just think: When you go to the dentist with a painful cavity, does it hurt when he removes the poison and source of your pain? Of course (unless we are under enough anesthesia). But does he harm you, or do you good?

We all need to submit to this authority and allow it to come in and fix us up with medicine that hurts at first but then produces a good result — peace in a system that is corrupt and out of control.

“Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” Hebrews 12:11.

Thank you Sir! May I have another?

v332 The Peace of Readiness

The Peace of Readiness

Are you ready if the Lord were to come right now? Have you done everything that is necessary to be shown obedient and faithful, that you are a son who is well-pleasing to Him?

Have you loved others as yourself? Have you loved them the way He loves you? Have you loved your enemies the same way without partiality?

Have you stewarded all that you have had charge over according to the desires of your Father? Have you clothed the naked, fed the poor, healed the wounded and set free the captives?

Is your life a living testimony of Him? Can others say that they are drawn to Him because of your affection and devotion of Him? Do they see you as you gaze into His wonderful face?

Have you told everyone who would listen about His great Love for them? Have you stood in the gap and prayed and made intercession for their souls?

Then come and go with me to my Father’s house.

The peace that comes from readiness is a weapon in our armor.

“And your feet shod with the preparation [readiness] of the gospel of peace.” Eph. 6:15

v.4.28 The Big Picture – Part 11

Lets recap the Big Picture so we can begin to see what He is doing:

Part 1 – God has a Will. He is relational. He declared that He would have many sons. As always, he provides a means of support and sustainability before He Creates. He builds His infrastructure. Thus Creation overtook Chaos and the stage was set for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven. He has set the stage for the drama of HisStory to play out. He made man unique, He made him “in our image” having will to act on thought and feelings, to express his heart. The question: Will man choose his Father as his Father has chosen him or will man choose Self and forsake the opportunity to have a relationship with his Father? The question is: Do we trust Him? Do we believe Him?

Part 2 – But Adam did not choose his Father, he did not trust Him, he did not believe Him, and in so doing was cut off from the Life of Spirit he once knew. Now God has provided a Way to come back to Eden. God has left a remnant in Adam (and by virtue of the seed concept all man) of his knowledge of God. He has “set eternity in our hearts” (that is the big hole that we have in us, set aside for Him). We must now go back to the point where we lost our Way, our establishing our will to be done above His Loving Perfect will, to get back on track. We decided to not trust Him, to not believe Him. We did it our way.

Part 3 – Did man choose to return (another word for repent) to his Father? Nope. Instead he listened to the new father, the father of lies, believing that God does not love him and that he is not wanted or acceptable to have a relationship to his heavenly Father. So that was just too much to take. We will show Him. We think we can be good enough, we think we can measure up to be equal with God (like our new father). So we have spent centuries building works that attempt to reach the heights of Gods standards, to set up our own kingdoms and set our own rules. This makes up the better part of the history of mankind, and the history of most men. Achieving great goals through our own efforts. The goal is to never submit to Authority, to prove that we can do it our way. We don’t want to trust Him, to believe Him.

Part 4 – Our Father shows us His heart. He shows us what He wants from His children. Both Cain and Abel bring their sacrifices. One is acceptable, the other is not. We are told in Hebrews, ““By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice…”. Here it is again. God wants us to have faith, to trust Him, to believe Him, not what we see, think or decide we want. Do we trust Him? Do we believe Him?

Part 5 – God begins to build His house on this line of man, a spiritual man, a man of faith, “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” Gen. 4:25. God is building a household of faithful sons (offspring that contain the Seed of His Spirit, who are spreading the Seed, His Word, in the earth). He is building a house and we are all — His sons — living stones from which He is building us up. “Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5. God is using Time to produce his building materials, the sons of God.

Part 6 – But we have an enemy (and he wishes we would forget or ignore him altogether) who is plotting and scheming against the purposes of God in the earth. His greatest weapon is your mind. He has access to it and you don’t even realize how much access he has. He has even convinced you that your thoughts originate with you. They do not! So he hides in the recesses of your mind planting lies, deceptive thoughts and doubts regarding your Father and his relationship with you. He will do anything to keep you from being a son of your Father. He accomplishes this mostly by making you believe that He doesn’t love you and that you are all alone, must trust yourself and believe in yourSelf (aka your enemy disguised as your thoughts) for all your provision and protection. A shrewd enemy will separate you from the fold, isolate you and devour you when you are unprotected.

Part 7 – Our Father has given us Time to choose Him, to trust Him, to believe Him. He is forever revealing Himself, His Love and His desire to bring you Home to Himself. But our enemy has a plan too. The enemy is using up all your time by making you focus on your need to fill the hole in you with temporal worldly pleasures. He continually presents the perversions of God’s provision and protection in the parade of what you must do to make yourSelf happy, safe and secure. If you bite that lure you have accepted a life-long project. Just long enough so that you miss the boat to your Fathers Kingdom. Distractions with Self lead you to Death and Eternal separation.

Part 8 – Now we did not do well with the Time given us so God decided to interrupt Time with Eternity — Himself. If you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself right? Well, God the Father waited till the Time was just right, then He entered to save the Day. He came and showed us Himself, as a Man, so we could behold Him and know Him, but mostly so we could trust Him and believe Him. He said in essence, “I want more like this Son of mine.” It is the same old song, new verse. We chose not to trust Him and believe His Word in the Garden. We are eating up the clock trying to find any other thing than that — submitting to the will of our heavenly Father, trusting and believing Him.

Part 9 – So now the enemy has a new battleground for your mind — the Image of God. Guess what he does? The same old, same old. He takes the Good gifts of God and perverts them. He takes the Son and repackages Him in a new form — Religion. Whereas God wanted us to relate to Him through the Relationship of a son, by faith, by love, by trust, by belief, we now have a very competitive and attractive option. Rather than being like Him, we just act like Him and look like Him. Monkey see, monkey do never had a more appropriate meaning. Religion has everybody looking at everybody else, but nobody looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

Part 10 – The enemies of God may do much to distort our ability to see Him clearly, but He, never to be outdone has slipped them a Mickey. God placed inside Himself fruit full of seed to bear more fruit. When we broke His body on the Cross we released the Seed into all the earth. When He left us, He did not leave us alone. He sent another in the form of His Holy Spirit to continue to show us the Son. Now, though much has been done by religion to distort God in Christ, those who received His Word, and who willingly die to themselves for Him, are His disciples, Johnny Appleseeds (if you will). God went viral and He is busy spreading His Love to all who draw near to Him. To those who trust Him and believe Him.

The Big Picture – Part 11

Repent or Die

Repent or Die. That statement has such an alarming ring. And it should, it is the shout to save your very life! Turn or burn is another way it has been put. In our tolerant modern thinking we have refined our beliefs of God to a milder, softer kind of God. We have remade Him to our liking. We don’t like hard gods that are unbending and unreasonable and don’t do things the way we like them so we just make a new one that is no God at all.

Here is God in Truth. He is everlastingly Love. He loves everyone of His creation, and holds a special place to love men, being created for a special relationship with Him, that being sons, like Him. When He came to the world, the world received Him not. Yet He came out of love, to save the world. The world HAS BEEN REDEEMED in the Son. On the cross, the salvation of man, past, present and future was completed in full. There is no more that ever needs to be done to save you. It is done, it is finished!

So what is the deal then? Why are we all working so hard to be saved? That is a good question. Why are you? Here is the work. “This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” John 6:29.

Well, you say, “Of course I believe!”. Do you? Here again we are so easily deceived. We just change our rules to make it palatable. We say we believe because we agree and accept this as truth in our mind. But remember the battle is in the mind. Too often the concept of belief stops right there in the mind.

Belief is not a state of mind, it is a state of being. And a state of being is not inert and dead, it is alive! If you believe, you express that belief. This is where many centuries of religious teaching has hijacked the purpose of God. There has been so much press against works that people have disconnected their faith from their works. We are literally afraid to do things for God, and with good excuse to boot, we don’t want to be accused of a faith by works. So instead we have a faith that doesn’t work — at all. Beloved, faith works!!!

James put it this way, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?” James 2:17-20.

Did you catch that? The devils believe too. And as they say in EE, they are not going to heaven.

Here is just how simple God made this. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10.

Many confess Him but do not believe Him. “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” Matt. 7:22.

Your faith must be in Him. If it is, you believe in Him. And when you believe in Him, your faith expresses itself in good works. It is not the other way around as the enemy wants you to think.

This believing manifests itself in that you do not continue to follow yourself, trust yourself, protect yourself, hoard and gain to yourself. You quit having faith and belief in your ability and trust Him and believe Him.

This is the exact meaning God had in mind when He said repent. Quit trusting in your Self, trust in Me. Turn from your ability, turn to My Ability. Have faith in God.

“Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Mark 9:26.

You Should Know Him By Now In this union of souls and the conscious delight and rest in one another that is the highest and most exalted relationship possible between two persons it is not right for one person to always tell the other person what to do. And so it is in our union with God, a person both loving and beloved. He does not delight in having to always explain what his will is, he enjoys it when we understand and act upon his will. Our highest calling and opportunity is to love him with all our being. Dallas Willard – Hearing God ©1984 InterVarsity Press
Instrumental Teachings Many believe that God has blessed them because of some special relationship they enjoy. Not so. Very often God blesses men with resources — things, cunning, power, charisma, health because they are of use to His sovereign purpose. He accomplishes His purpose through all things — even the jawbone of a donkey. To believe you are someone special or that you have a special relationship with God because He uses you is to expose your own great folly and pride. You may just be the jawbone of a donkey or even some other part. To be used makes you an instrument not a Son. I have no particular relationship to my hoe but only to my children. Tom Van Hoogen
Pass on the Praise to the Provider When you do receive praise for something you have done, take it indifferently and return it to God. Reflect it back to God, the giver of the gift, the blesser of the action, the aid of the project. Always give God thanks for making you an instrument of his glory for the benefit of others. Self-Abandonment This then is what it means to seek God perfectly: to withdraw from illusion and pleasure, from worldly anxieties and desires, from the works that God does not want, from a glory that is only human display; to keep my mind free form confusion in order that my liberty may be always at the disposal of His will; to entertain silence in my heart and listen for the voice of God; to cultivate an intellectual freedom from the images of created things in order to receive the secret contact of God in obscure love; to love all men as myself; to rest in humility and to find peace in withdrawal from conflict and competition with other men; to turn aside from controversy and put away heavy loads of judgment and censorship and criticism and the whole burden of opinions that I have no obligations to carry; to have a will that is always ready to fold back within itself and draw all the powers of the soul down from its deepest center to rest in silent expectancy for the coming of God, poised in tranquil and effortless concentration upon the point of my dependence on Him; to gather all that I am, and have, all that I can possibly suffer to do or be, and abandon them all to God in the resignation of a perfect love and blind faith and pure trust in God, to do His will. Does He Attend Your Church? Satan is always at church before the preacher is in the pulpit or a member is in the pew. He comes to hinder the sower, to impoverish the soil, or to corrupt the seed. He uses these tactics only when courage and faith are in the pulpit, and zeal and prayer are in the pew; but if dead ritualism or live liberalism are in the pulpit, he does not attend, because they are no danger to him. E. M. Bounds – Guide to Spiritual Warfare, circa 1880, copyright 1984 by Whitaker House
Honesty IS the Best Policy A fanatic is one who entrenches himself in invincible ignorance. Job will not accept anything that contradicts the facts he knows; he is not splenetic, he does not say God is cruel, he simply states the facts It looks as though God is rejecting me without any reason, all the facts go to prove this and I am not going to blink them. Job will not lay a flattering unction to his soul on the line of expediency. No man ever puts a stumbling-block in the way of others by telling the truth; to tell the truth is more honouring to God than to tell a lie. Oswald Chambers – The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers
A Very Pressing Matter The man who comes to a right belief about God is relieved of ten thousand temporal problems, for he sees at once that these have to do with matters which at the most cannot concern him for very long; but even if the multiple burdens of time may be lifted from him, the one mighty single burden of eternity begins to press down upon him with a weight more crushing than all the woes of the world piled one upon another. That mighty burden is his obligation to God. It includes an instant and lifelong duty to love God with every power of mind and soul, to obey Him perfectly, and to worship Him acceptably. And when the man s laboring conscience tells him that he has done none of these things, but has from childhood been guilty of foul revolt against the Majesty in the heavens, the inner pressure of self-accusation may become too heavy to bear. Under New Ownership Before the Fall there was an earth; after the Fall there was a “world”; at the Lord’s return there will be a kingdom. Just as the world belongs to Satan so The Kingdom belongs to our Lord Jesus. Moreover it is the Kingdom that displaces and that will displace the world. Shine a Light Along the Way There is an urgent need for good works in believers. As it is necessary that the sun shines every day, it is even more necessary that every believer lets his light shine before men. We have been created anew in Christ for this — to hold forth the Word of Life as lights in the world. Christ needs you urgently to let His light shine through you. The unsaved around you need your light if they are to find their way to God. God needs you to let His glory be seen through you. Just as a lamp functions to light up a room, every believer should function to light up the world. Andrew Murray – God’s Plans for You, circa 1890, © 1983 by Whitaker House
