Don’t Worry, Be Holy

There is a popular island-styled song that is used over and over again to lift peoples souls to thoughts of happiness and forgetfulness. It is called Don’t Worry, Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin. And this capsulizes the world’s approach to sin and the troubles it brings into our lives.

You see, the world is full of trouble, pain and heartache brought on by the sin which entered through Adam. Adam was acting in his own will to do what he thought and felt would make him happy. Ironic isn’t it? What we do when we are acting in self-interest, thinking and feeling that this thing, this act will make us happy, actually adds incomprehensible misery to our lives. Acting according to what we think and feel will make us happy is Self-centered, self-serving, self-gratifying, Self-ish.

We were created to be like God – to be others-centered. The greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God, the Great Other. And the second is like it – love others, as yourSelf. Do you notice that we are not commanded to love our Self? That is axiomatic (Self evident), we always do that anyway, its just natural. No, we have to be commanded to do what is not natural but supernatural – to love others.

Often the Bible pits one realm, one concept against another. Think of the dichotomies, the either or scenarios. You can’t have it both ways. The same goes for being happy vs. being holy. Here are a few of the choices you must make, no fence-sitting allowed. Sitting on fences is a very unstable place, you get tossed about by every wind and eventually land with a crash on one side of the fence or the other, usually the wrong side.

Light vs. Dark
The Light embodies and reveals God. God is Light, a revealer, you only like the dark because your deeds are evil. If you are hiding in places you cannot talk to others about or are not willing to reveal, if your life is one big coverup of covert thoughts and actions, you are Dark, not Light. But the darkness doesn’t understand this.

Spirit vs. Flesh
God is Spirit and those that know Him commune with Him in Spirit and in Truth. If you do not know Him, (notice I didn’t say know ‘about’ Him) if you do not have an intimate relationship with Him it is because you either do not have the Spirit in you or you do not operate in the spirit but the Flesh. The flesh is enmity with God. That would make you His enemy, not His friend.

God vs. Mammon
Choose which you will serve. You do it every day. You make choices about whether you will deny yourself, often with cost and personal sacrifice or you are factoring in the “what’s in it for me” clause to whatever you choose to do. Every day there is the parade and onslaught of worldly material and psychic (mental/emotional needs) attractions to your soul. Every time you choose to do your will, to get the thing you want and feel you must have at the expense of seeking and choosing His will you are choosing whom you will serve. For no man can serve two masters.

Holy vs. Happy
If you stop to notice there is a pattern. Every time I choose my will, to get, to have what I want, I sin like Adam. Christ was sinless because He never sought His own will. He never considered Himself to act upon what he thought and felt would make Him happy. He always did the will of His Father. He was always others-centered. He always loved, as a choice. Make no mistake – loving, doing God’s will, denying Himself was always a choice. It was a choice between seeking to be happy or holy. He always chose to be holy, set apart for God’s purpose — saved.

God is giving you choices too: Light vs. Dark?, Spirit vs. Flesh?, God vs. Mammon?, Holy vs. Happy? Every day you decide for or against God. You decide which Kingdom you belong to. You see if you keep choosing opposed to God you are not choosing Him. You are revealing your heart of hearts. What you say does not hold a candle to what you actually do — the fruit. God is a fruit inspector, He (as well as we) know them by their fruit.

The troubles of this world can have one of two effects on you. They will cause you pain and heartache and you will find ways to compensate for them by seeking what will give you pleasure and make you happy. You will exercise your will to do what you think and feel will make you happy. Then sin will have accomplished Satan’s purpose.

The troubles of this world will cause you pain and heartache and you will come to learn and understand that there is nothing good within you and you are just like so many others in this world that seek to get their need to feel good and gain security by taking from others, hoarding things, dominating over them and whatever fleshly methods you may use to make yourSelf happy. Then sin will have achieved God’s purpose – to lead you to Christ.

So when you have trouble. Don’t worry, be holy.

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33.

Here are the words to the original song with the word holy substituted for the word happy. It doesn’t make such a pretty song but it makes a beautiful life in the eyes of the Lord.

Here is a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don’t worry be holy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don’t worry, be holy……

Ain’t got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don’t worry, be holy
The landlord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don’t worry, be holy
Look at me I am holy
Don’t worry, be holy
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me
I make you holy
Don’t worry, be holy
Ain’t got no cash, ain’t got no style
Ain’t got not girl to make you smile
But don’t worry be holy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don’t worry, be holy (now)…..

There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
Like good little children
Don’t worry, be holy
Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
But when you worry
You make it double
Don’t worry, be holy……
Don’t worry don’t do it, be holy
Put a smile on your face
Don’t bring everybody down like this
Don’t worry, it will soon past
Whatever it is
Don’t worry, be holy
